NINA har siden 2003 hatt ansvaret for prosjektet "Arealer for Rødlistearter – Kartlegging og Overvåking (ARKO)”, som er en del av Nasjonalt program for kartlegging og overvåking av biologisk mangfold. Nasjonalt program for kartlegging og overvåking av biologisk mangfold styres av et interdepartementalt utvalg med 7 departementer representert. ARKO ligger fra 2011 under prosjektgruppa for naturtyper og truete arter. ARKO er et samarbeid mellom NINA, Norsk institutt for skog og landskap, Naturhistorisk museum (UiO) og Institutt for naturforvaltning (UMB). I 2011 gikk prosjektet inn i sin 3. periode.
