說明
This is a data set from the project Artsprosjekt_59-12_Wood-inhabiting_basidiomycetes within the Norwegian Taxonomy Initiative, funded by the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Center (Artsdatabanken). The data set consists of fruitbody observations of corticioid basidiomycete fungi on spruce (Picea abies) logs. Sixty logs were surveyed for fruitbodies in each of the ten Norwegian study localities. Fruitbody specimens were identified by Viacheslav Spirin, Matti Kulju, Sergio Pérez Gorjón, Sten Svantesson and Jenni Nordén. The identification work was supervised by Karl-Henrik Larsson who also checked all the specimens that represent taxa challenging to identify.

Basidiomycete fungi (includes e.g. cap mushrooms) in Norway are partly relatively well known, but for species with inconspicuous fruitbodies on dead wood, the knowledge is still deficient. We focus on the diversity of wood-inhabiting corticioids, including heterobasidiomycetes, and analyze it from extensive fruitbody data from 600 logs at 10 localities across the distribution range of spruce in Norway. A similar survey (1080 logs at 18 sites) was conducted in Sweden, making it possible to study the variation in fungal species composition at a large spatial scale in Scandinavian natural-like spruce forests. Our objective is to increase knowledge on diversity and distribution of corticioid fungi on spruce in Norway. We have surveyed species both as fruitbodies (the traditional method) and as mycelia inside the logs, hidden from the eye. The mycelia can be identified to species by sequencing the DNA in the mycelia. We compare fruitbody-based and DNA-based diversity survey methods to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of DNA-based surveys, and if DNA-based methods (molecular screening) can replace or complement the slow and expert-dependent fruitbody survey method. Our large fruitbody dataset considerably increases our knowledge about which species of corticioid homo- and heterobasidiomycetes occur on spruce in Norway and how they are distributed. We found altogether 299 species, 25 of which are reported in Norway for the first time, and 12 are new to science. Many of the new species represent heterobasidiomycetes. Several of the findings represent the second or third record from Norway. We also learned much about the ecology of the individual species. Twentyone percent of the species we found were not considered in the latest Red List evaluation. Thirteen percent were considered in the Red List evaluation, but decided to be not evaluated (NE). For 3%, there was a deficiency of data (DD). Our species findings will therefore make it possible to include more species in the next Red List evaluation, and have a better ground for evaluating the Red List status of all corticioid species.

經費來源 | The identification and processing of the corticioid specimen data was funded by the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (Artsdatabanken) with two grants within the Norwegian Taxonomy Initiative (Artsprosjektet). The other grant was for arranging a workshop on heterobasidiomycete fungi in which several of the specimens examined here were identified. Data collection was funded by the Research Council of Norway (grant 203808/E40). |
研究區域描述 | The 10 study localities were situated in the counties of Østfold, Telemark, Akershus, Oppland, Sør-Trøndelag, Nord-Trøndelag and Nordland. |
研究設計描述 | Sixty large spruce logs representing different stages of decay were thoroughly surveyed for basidiomycete fruitbodies in each locality, within a 4-ha sample plot. |

目的 | The main objectives for creating the data set are to increase knowledge on the diversity and distribution of corticioid fungi on spruce in Norway, and to compare fruitbody-based and DNA-based diversity screening methods. We provide comparable baseline biodiversity data for representative spruce-dominated sites across the distribution range of spruce in Norway and Sweden. We increase the knowledge about distribution and population sizes of rare and red-listed corticioid fungi on spruce. |
