Description

The aim of the project was to assess the effect of regulation and weirs on diversity of river benthic macroinvertebrates. Macroinvertebrates were sampled by four-minute kick-net sampling, using a 500-µm net. Samples were collected in spring and autumn 2019 from 19 stations along a 29-km reach of a the river Nea, between the lakes Heggsetsjøen and Selbusjøen. Samples were collected incloste to the weirs, one sample upstream a weir in a stationary part and one sample downstream a weir in a rapid. The samples were taken by holding the net downstream and kicking up the substrate while backing upstream. In stationary parts, the net was moved from side to side in front of the kicking feet to catch the material that was swirling up. All benthic groups were determined at the lowest possible taxonomic level and number of specimens was counted. Two different biological quality indices were calculated for the study reach to assess the ecological status of the river.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 38 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Benthic macroinvertebrate samples from 19 stations in June and October 2019, using a 500-µm kick-net were collected. Sampling stations were chosen close to the weirs, where one station was downstream of the weir in a fast-flowing part of the river (rapids) and one station was upstream of the weir in a stationary part of each weir pool. The samples were taken by holding the net downstream and kicking up the substrate while backing upstream. In stationary parts, the net was moved from side to side in front of the kicking feet to catch the material that was swirling up. Different instream habitats were sampled proportionally to their existence in the stations following standardized methodology. Four-minute kick samples were collected to reach reliable measures of biodiversity.

Method step description:

  1. Samples were picked partly fresh and partly preserved in ethanol and all benthic groups were determined at the lowest possible taxonomic level and number of specimens was counted by an expert with over 30 years of experience in benthic macroinvertebrate analyses in the area.
